Tasting Note
Black cherries, licorice, tar, new leather and spices come together in this round yet powerful wine. The 2009 La Forra boasts considerable depth and textural richness. The presence of other red grapes in addition to the Sangiovese, plus the partial aging in French oak barrels gives La Forra an international feel that works quite nicely. This should be quite lovely once the tannins soften a bit. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Score – 92.

A rich, flavourful, grippy-dusty example of Chianti, with evident stuffing and concentration. The richness and ripeness reflect the 2009 vintage accurately, while the flavours linger on admirably. A solid Riserva all in all. Tasted January 2013. Score – 89

Part of the enormous Folonari portfolio since 1971, wines from the Nozzole estate are definitely worth keeping an eye on. Dark-opaque red-garnet in colour, the 2009 La Forra Chianti Classico Riserva displays beautiful, immensely characterful aromas of dark savoury red fruits, cedarwood, forest floor, roasted meats, hickory, and spice. Complex, retaining superbly structured fruit, very firm tannins, balanced acidity, and a ‘brooding’ yet elegant hint of dark savoury red fruits on the finish. Great balance, poise, and lift. 90% Sangiovese, the rest ‘other varieties.’ Now-2023. (Tasted January 2014) Score – 90
