Tasting Note
The 2006 Poggio Valente (Sangiovese, Alicante) is
a beautiful version of this wine. Well-articulated
aromatics lead to layers of vibrant dark fruit, minerals,
licorice, French oak and new leather. Medium to full in
body, the 2006 Poggio Valente possesses considerable
energy and precision in a powerful, brooding style that
needs a few more years of bottle age to fully emerge.
This is a wonderful effort from Elisabetta Geppetti.
Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026. Score – 92.

Offers prune and ripe, crushed black fruit, with hints of violet
and oak. Full and well-structured, with firm, fruit-coated tannins
and a long, tasty finish. Fruity and fresh now, but a little chewy.
Slightly Amarone-like. Best after 2009. 4,200 cases made. –JS

Quite distinctive, feminine, aromatic character. Gentle spice, firm
oak but well integrated. Ash and pine along with blackberry and
savoury dried herbs. Long and elegant but not lacking in flavour.
Finish is quite memorable with cracked black pepper and sea
salt along with dried black fruit. Alluring and complex.
Tasted August 2011. 91 points

Yes, the price is elevated for the DOCG here, but this wine is also
well-above the average in quality. This could easily pass for very
good Brunello at twice the price: complex aromas and flavours
span the spectrum from mature red and black fruit to earth, leather,
dried herbs and integrated wood. Tannins are big but plush and ripe,
and flavours linger on impressively – a rare example of a big, solid wine
that also invites additional sips. Not to be missed by fans of top notch
Tuscan reds. Tasted August 2011. Value Rating: *** 91 points
