Tasting Note
The 2009 Saffredi comes across as a bit subdued at this stage. Dark red cherries, licorice, tobacco and new leather meld together in this supple Saffredi. Overall, the 2009 looks like a fairly restrained and accessible Saffredi. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027. Score – 93. (Antonio Galloni, erobertparker.com, June 2012)

Saffredi takes its name, and is dedicated to, winemaker Elisabetta Geppetti’s father-in-law and mentor, “Fredi.” It’s a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a splash of Syrah, from vines planted in 1982. The 2009 shows the ripeness of the vintage, offering plenty of dense, dark fruit and Christmas cake spice. Barrel influence is noted but is overall well integrated into the ensemble. Terrific length and depth. This is very fine wine to be sure, concentrated yet balanced, with the potential to continue to improve over the next decade and hold until the ’30s. Fine wine.
